The lecture was part of the StudioVU: The Department of Art Lecture Series 2009-2010 season. He developed the photographic method of solarization and invented a technique using photograms which he dubbed rayographs (as in his print, Rayograph, 1923, Private Collection). Armed with lightweight cameras such as the new German-made Leica, street photographers and documentarians captured strange, unguarded moments on the streets of Paris, Berlin and New York. They rented modest quarters for the new museum in the Heckscher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue (corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street) in Manhattan, and it opened to the public on November 7, 1929, nine days after the Wall Street Crash.
